Bell’s Palsy/Facial Nerve Palsy

Bell’s Palsy is one of the more frightening skin conditions. This is because it can happen suddenly and completely unexpectedly. If you or a loved one are suffering from Bell’s Palsy in the North East, Florida, area, Dr. Amy Kulak, MD, and our team is here to help. But what is Bell’s Palsy, and how can we treat it?

What is Bell’s Palsy or Facial Nerve Palsy?

The exact cause of Bell’s Palsy is currently unknown, and it can occur at any age. However, some experts believe that it is caused by swelling and inflammation of the nerve that controls the muscles of your face. Since Bell’s Palsy only affects one side of your face, experts believe only the nerves on that certain side of your face are affected. Here are some of the symptoms of Bell’s Palsy:

  • Drooling
  • Rapid weakness or paralysis on one side of your face (this can occur within hours or over the course of several days)
  • Facial droop on one side of your face
  • Difficulty smiling or closing your eyes
  • Increased sensitivity to sound on one side of your face
  • Headaches
  • A loss of taste

For most people affected by Bell’s Palsy, the symptoms begin to improve within a few weeks. Within six months, symptoms should be gone entirely. In some extremely rare cases, Bell’s Palsy can last for life. Since the early stages of Bell’s Palsy closely resemble the early stages of a stroke, you should seek immediate medical assistance if you are experiencing any type of paralysis in your face.

Cosmetic Surgery to Treat Bell’s Palsy

After recovering from Bell’s Palsy, reconstructive surgery may be required to correct lasting facial nerve issues. Procedures such as eyebrow lift, eyelid lift, facial implants, and nerve grafts are standard. An eyebrow lift will be required every few years for lasting results.

Dr. Kulak did a fabulous job. She repaired a very large gaping hole where my mother’s eyelid wise. Dr. Kulak was able to do so without using a skin graft, which greatly shortened the recovery time. Now, my mother’s eyelid looks virtually the same even though about 75% of it was removed. We are extremely pleased with Dr. Kulak’s professionalism, attention to detail, concern and care. Highly... recommend her services.read more
