What Is a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels are often applied to the face, hands, or neck and are used to help improve the appearance and feel of the skin. These peels are much safer than they used to be; however, they carry some side effects and possible risks. For example, redness, dryness, stinging, or burning are common temporary effects that go away over time. Other long-term risks such as scarring, infections, or kidney damage are very rare but do happen.

There are three main types of chemical peels; superficial peels, medium peels, and deep peels. A superficial peel uses mild acids and is only used to penetrate the outermost layer of the skin. Medium peels use trichloroacetic or glycolic acid and reach the middle and outer layer of the skin, making them effective against damaged skin cells. Deep peels penetrate the middle layer of the skin and remove damaged skin cells.

How Do Chemical Peels Work?

Most skin peels are done in-office and require little to no downtime, but deep peels may be done in an outpatient surgical facility. Typically, an oculofacial plastic surgeon will numb the area of the skin with a topical anesthetic. Then, a cotton ball or brush will be used to apply the chemical solution. Once the chemical solution has done its job, the chemicals will be removed, and a neutralizing solution will be added.

There are things you should do on your end to prepare for a chemical peel. For example, you should not use any type of retinol or Retin-A topical medication for at least two days leading up to the procedure. It’s recommended that you disclose any medication you are taking to your doctor to ensure the procedure can be done safely.

Dr. Kulak did a fabulous job. She repaired a very large gaping hole where my mother’s eyelid wise. Dr. Kulak was able to do so without using a skin graft, which greatly shortened the recovery time. Now, my mother’s eyelid looks virtually the same even though about 75% of it was removed. We are extremely pleased with Dr. Kulak’s professionalism, attention to detail, concern and care. Highly... recommend her services.read more
