What is Upper Blepharoplasty?
As you start to age, you may notice that your upper lid feels heavy, and this can be caused by excess skin, the eyebrow descending, or both. Upper blepharoplasty or an eyelid lift can be done to correct the problem.
The reasons for undergoing an upper blepharoplasty may be purely cosmetic, functional, or both. Functional upper blepharoplasty involves reducing the upper eyelid to improve visual obstruction caused by the upper lid. Patients may seek cosmetic surgery to correct overhanging skin and get a more youthful appearance.
Basis of Upper Blepharoplasty
The procedure can be done with local or general anesthesia. The process involves finding the upper eyelid crease on both eyelids and designing an excision that removes enough skin to alleviate the tissue and preserve enough to allow normal eyelid closure. In some cases, a patient may need a small amount of the muscle that closes the eyelid may be removed. Fat is typically kept over the middle of the eyelid, but some removal may also be necessary. Once the procedure is complete, the eyelid is closed with sutures, and the incision lies in the eyelid crease, making it less visible after healing is complete.
Upper Blepharoplasty Recovery Period
Most patients will experience some mild bruising and swelling around the eyes for 10-14 days. You may have to avoid makeup for a few days and avoid wearing contacts for a little while.
The complications are relatively rare but are there. Some patients may experience too much skin being removed, resulting in difficulty closing the eyelid; This can turn into the chronic dry eye. Other complications can include ptosis of the eyelid, asymmetry of the eyelids, or even blindness. Complications are rare, but you should still talk to your surgeon about the risks and complications you could have.
Advantages to the Upper Blepharoplasty Procedure
Some of our patients ask about the advantages of having an upper blepharoplasty. Some of the most common benefits include:
- Rejuvenate your appearance- the change will not be drastic, but it will be enough to make you look more relaxed and rested
- Improve your ability to see- sagging eyelids can make it difficult to see, and surgery can help eliminate this issue
- Communicate clearly- do you often look tired or mad all the time? Drooping eyelids can sometimes send the wrong signal about how you are feeling. Once you have had the procedure, your eyelids will rest in their natural position, and you won’t be sending mixed signals.
