If your eyelids loosen, whether it’s due to aging or trauma, Canthoplasty is a procedure that can help you get back to looking your best. Dr. Amy Kulak, MD, and the team are here to help the people of the Jacksonville, Florida area with their cosmetic surgery needs, but what exactly is Canthoplasty?

What Is Canthoplasty?

Canthoplasty (also known as canthopexy or canthal tightening) is designed to help tighten the lower eyelid. There are several reasons why someone may need this procedure. Aging is the most common reason. As we get older, our skin begins to lose some laxity, especially in the eyelid. This can cause our eyelids to droop or lose shape, which can be uncomfortable and cause vision issues. Canthoplasty helps tighten the eyelids, making up for the loss of laxity.

This is also a common procedure after any type of reconstructive surgery or trauma. For example, Canthoplasty is a requirement following lower eyelid blepharoplasty to improve aesthetics and preserve normal eyelid function.

Getting Canthoplasty

Canthoplasty can be a complicated procedure, but a trained professional will be able to handle it easily. The goal is to cut the lower canthal tendon and then reposition or tighten it. The surgeon will then pull the tendon into its new position to support the eyelid, tighten it, and reverse any drooping.

There are some postoperative instructions patients will have to follow to ensure proper recovery. For example, there should be no bending, lifting a heavy object, or strenuous exercise for ten days after the procedure. Cold compressions are also recommended following the procedure to help reduce swelling.

What are the Risks of Canthoplasty?

There are some risks involved in the procedure. Since the procedure involves incisions in the eyelids, complications can happen. Damage to the muscle can result in a droopy eyelid, and a hemorrhage can occur. However, if you go to an experienced oculofacial plastic surgeon, the chances of dealing with any of these negative side-effects decrease significantly.

Dr. Kulak did a fabulous job. She repaired a very large gaping hole where my mother’s eyelid wise. Dr. Kulak was able to do so without using a skin graft, which greatly shortened the recovery time. Now, my mother’s eyelid looks virtually the same even though about 75% of it was removed. We are extremely pleased with Dr. Kulak’s professionalism, attention to detail, concern and care. Highly... recommend her more
