Brow and Forehead Lift

Dr. Amy Kulak is a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in oculofacial plastic surgery. She dedicates herself to serving North East Florida residents with all their cosmetic needs. Dr. Kulak performs many brow and forehead lifts. This minimally invasive surgery helps raise the forehead and brow line.

What Is A Brow and Forehead Lift?

A brow and forehead lift are often used interchangeably. They describe a cosmetic surgical procedure in which the skin around the brows and forehead moves upwards. The skin is typically pulled and reattached at the hairline.

Over time, these areas of skin tend to sag. This procedure helps to achieve a tighter and less wrinkled look. This procedure is recommended for people who wish to have a more youthful-looking appearance. It can also correct low-hanging eyebrows. The lift will create a bigger arch which gives the face a refreshed look.

Pre-Operative - Brow and Forehead Procedure

The process begins with a customized consultation. The surgeon goes over a surgical plan specifically geared for the needs and des of their patient. A thorough review of the patient’s medical history and health habits is discussed. A risk assessment is also made to make sure you are healthy enough to attempt surgery with minimal risk. One may need to avoid certain medications, consuming alcohol, and smoking weeks before the procedure. Smoking especially increases risks on all accounts.

Operative - Brow and Forehead Procedure

For some patients, a brow and forehead lift is an outpatient procedure. It is often performed in an office setting or plastic surgery center. Depending on the extent of the procedure and risks to the patient, these lifts are also done at hospitals.

On the day of the surgery, your doctor will review your individual care plan and the procedure with you. You will then begin your surgery preparations. An anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist will begin your sedation, and other medications to keep you comfortable. After sedation your surgeon makes an incision and pulls your forehead into its new position. Sutures or staples are put in place then removed a week or so after surgery. These are usually placed in the hairline, out of sight. There are several different types of brow lifts techniques:

  1. Endoscopic Brow Lift – This is the most common technique which involves a tiny camera called an endoscope. Through several small incisions in the hairline, surgeons use this camera to view and separate the necessary tissue from the muscle. Once repositioned the surgeon closes the incisions.
  2. Classic Brow Lift– This technique is also known as a coronal brow lift. The surgeon makes an incision by the top of the ear and cuts along the hairline over to the other top of the opposite ear. They remove excess skin and fat from the area and re-attach muscle if needed. Their precise and careful alignment helps bring a more symmetrical and youthful look to the face.
  3. Temporal Lift– This is the most minimally invasive of all brow and forehead lifts. The temporal lift raises the outer, temporal parts of the brow, unlike the other, which involve the middle of the forehead. This procedure also brings a lift in the cheeks and corners of the eyes. The recovery time is also usually shorter than other surgeries.
  4. Hairline Brow Lift– By cutting the hairline, the plastic surgeon removes loose skin and constructs a new hairline. Instead of pulling the skin like other procedures, the skin is simply cut and removed.
  5. Trichophytic Brow Lift– This procedure is common for patients wanting to make their forehead smaller. It works for those who have a higher hairline. After removing the skin, it is sutured in a higher place.
  6. Trans-Blepharoplasty Brow Lift– The point of entry is near the upper eyelid crease. The forehead is adjusted from the bottom. This also is a minimally invasive surgery with shorter healing periods.

Post-Operative - Brow and Forehead Procedure

Healing for a brow and forehead lift is generally very mild. You will likely experience swelling around the forehead and brow area. It’s common to experience numbness and tight sensation in the forehead at first.

You should remain in an elevated position even during sleep to decrease swelling. Use ice or cold gels every twenty minutes for the first several days following cosmetic surgery. This will help with healing. You should apply cold to your eyes, forehead, and scalp.

You may have loose netting or gauze wrapped around your face. Changing this regularly with clean gauze will help reduce the chances of infection. Usually, within 24-48 hours after post-op, you can remove the gauze. After all, swelling resides, you will have a rejuvenated, smooth, new appearance.

Dr. Kulak did a fabulous job. She repaired a very large gaping hole where my mother’s eyelid wise. Dr. Kulak was able to do so without using a skin graft, which greatly shortened the recovery time. Now, my mother’s eyelid looks virtually the same even though about 75% of it was removed. We are extremely pleased with Dr. Kulak’s professionalism, attention to detail, concern and care. Highly... recommend her more
